Peer Driven Change

Peer-Driven Change is a strategy for achieving social impact and a way to combat poverty.

This approach supports participants as the sole decision-makers in the matter of improving their own lives. It fosters the spirit of mutuality as people support each other in reaching their goals and making their community a better place to live.

At the beginning of 2021, Up with Africa (UW/A) partnered with Mauricio Miller from the Community Independence Initiative (CII) to scale an alternative approach across the continent of Africa. UW/A began with the mindset shift: “We are not here to help you; we are here to learn from you.” This approach aimed to enhance our understanding of how to effectively engage communities in partnership for change.

As of 2026, our team, along with local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) has implemented and completed five separate Peer Driven Change Initiatives in Uganda, DRC and Rwanda. Learn more about the approach below.
